How this started

Rick Sardelli spent nine years running demolition and renovation crews across lower Fairfield County before buying a single truck and one container in 2010. The reason was simple enough: he had spent most of a decade waiting on containers that turned up late, turned up in the wrong size, or turned up with a price that changed once the load crossed a scale.

Sixteen years on we run a fleet across Stamford and the surrounding towns, and the operating principle has not moved. Tell people the truth about what they need, put the container down without damaging anything, and charge the number that was quoted.

What we actually do differently

We recommend smaller containers. This is the one that surprises people. A great deal of the housing across Stamford, Greenwich, Darien, Norwalk and the inland towns was built when plaster over wood lath and heavy dimensional framing were ordinary construction. That material is dense. A 20 yard filled with it reaches its tonnage allowance at roughly two-thirds of its visible height, and the customer pays overage on space they were never permitted to use. Recommending the 15 yard instead costs us revenue and saves the customer money. We do it anyway, and in a state where disposal is as expensive as it is here the difference is not small.

We size for wet material. On a shoreline the single most underestimated cost is water weight. Saturated insulation, soaked carpet and waterlogged timber can approach double their dry weight, and disposal is charged by the ton. If a property has taken water we size for that at the quote stage rather than letting it appear as an overage afterwards.

Hardwood cribbing on every delivery. A loaded container concentrates several tons through four small contact points. Planking under the rollers and rails takes ninety seconds, costs nothing, and is not something you should have to ask for.

One number. The flat rate covers delivery, seven days, collection, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance, with the overage rate quoted in the same breath. No fuel surcharge, no environmental fee appearing on an invoice for the first time.

Why local knowledge actually matters here

Two things about this county genuinely change how a container job runs, and neither is obvious from a map.

The first is the Merritt Parkway. Commercial vehicles are prohibited on Route 15 along its entire length from Greenwich to Milford, and the bridges are too low for a truck in any case. No roll-off reaches your property that way. Everything runs on I-95, the Boston Post Road, Route 7 and the north-south surface roads, which makes an inland job in New Canaan, Wilton or Weston considerably longer than the mileage implies. We schedule inland work in blocks because of it, and we price the real run rather than the straight line.

The second is Connecticut's disposal position. Since the Hartford trash-to-energy plant closed in 2022 the state has exported around 41% of its municipal solid waste to landfills in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia. That is expensive, and it is not reversing quickly. Stamford is better placed than most of the state, because there is a private transfer station and materials recovery facility operating in the city and the municipal waste it handles goes to waste-to-energy plants in Bridgeport and Westchester rather than straight onto a long-haul rail car. Knowing that is the difference between a quote that holds and a quote that moves.
